The Real Thing |

In Michigan everyone knows about the Edmund Fitzgerald. I was born in Michigan and I spent a lot of time on the Great Lakes.
ReplyDeleteI now live near Cleveland where the Edmund Fitzgerald would deliver her cargo and I live close to where she was built in Lorain Ohio. I was raised near Detroit and I used to drive by Mariners cathedral in downtown Detroit all the time.
Once a year they hold a service for all the seamen who have gone down with their ships. If anyone has "died at sea" they ring a ships bell each time for every person in that year. It reminds us of our maritime history even though we live in the middle of a great continent.
Thank you for sharing this model with us all.
Dave on the Great lakes.

The "Fitz" was built in Detroit, not Lorain. I have home movies of her being built.
DeleteMy Dad was Chief Engineer on her many times in his career, & my Uncle Ralph G. Walton went down on her along with the rest of his shipmates, on Nov. 10, 1975.
