Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth's orbit. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. The unanticipated announcement of Sputnik 1's success precipitated the Sputnik crisis in the United States and ignited the Space Race, a part of the larger Cold War. The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the Space Age. Apart from its value as a technological first, Sputnik also helped to identify the upper atmospheric layer's density, through measuring the satellite's orbital changes. It also provided data on radio-signal distribution in the ionosphere. Pressurized nitrogen in the satellite's body provided the first opportunity for meteoroid detection. If a meteoroid penetrated the satellite's outer hull, it would be detected by the temperature data sent back to Earth - Wikipedia

Sputnik (Спутник - Satélite) foi o nome dado a primeira série de satélites artificiais Soviética, concebida para estudar as capacidades de lançamento de cargas úteis para o espaço e para estudar os efeitos da ausência de peso e da radiação sobre os organismos vivos. Serviu também para estudar as propriedades da superfície terrestre com vista à preparação do primeiro voo espacial tripulado.O Sputnik 1 foi o primeiro satélite artificial da Terra, lançado no dia 4 de Outubro de 1957, pela União Soviética, e marcou o início da exploração do espaço. Este satélite emitiu sons com frequências de 22 e 44 MHz, que indicavam a sua temperatura interna.Durante a Guerra Fria, o engenheiro soviético Sergei Korolev construiu um foguetão, para transportar uma bomba até à América (R-7 Semyorka, o primeiro míssil balístico intercontinental), que foi utilizado para lançar o Sputnik 1.
