The date, which began as a religious celebration in the 17th century, has become a worldwide cultural event, marked by parades, festivities, and the use of the color green.
St. Patrick was a 5th-century Christian missionary responsible for bringing Christianity to Ireland.
Born in Britain, he was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping, he became a priest and returned to the country to evangelize.
He is credited with using the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity and, according to legend, driving all snakes out of the island.
Before green became the symbol of the date, blue was the color associated with St. Patrick. The shade known as St. Patrick’s Blue was used in crests and historical garments.
Until 1970, the date was considered a solemn religious holiday in Ireland, and even pubs remained closed that day.
The festive tone only emerged later, driven by the Irish in the USA. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the USA, not in Ireland.
In 1737, Boston held the first St. Patrick’s Day parade, organized by Irish immigrants. Dublin only began promoting festive parades in the 1990s.
