Here, a second attempt with styrofoam board. I got this styrofoam board out of a TV package. I decided to try something in 1/24 scale, which is the scale of Playmobil miniatures. As I have a set of Roman legionaries, I decided to create something that could be used as a stand for them. The type of structure I have in mind can also be used for medieval or pirate themed dioramas.
I chose a part of the center of the plate, where there was already a space that has the perfect shape of a passage/door.
With a ballpoint pen I marked lines, forming a pattern of bricks or blocks.
Then, with a utility knife, I made 3mm deep grooves over the pen marks. With an ice cream stick I made a kind of spatula that I used to reinforce the cracks between each brick.
To paint, I used matte acrylic paints in black (for the base) and white (for the dry brush).
For base paint, there is no secret. You will paint everything without leaving white spaces between the grooves. Two coats are enough and, for the paint to penetrate well into the grooves, we can dilute it with a little water in the first coat. The second coat is made with pure paint.
Below, the piece with two coats of base paint, already dry.
Below, the piece already with the dry painting performed. The dry brush technique is simple: wet the brush in the paint and then, before passing it on the piece to be painted, brush it on another surface until the brush is almost dry. Only then do you paint the main piece. The idea is that it is executed with smooth, agile and delicate movements, leaving a small amount of color in each of these passes. More soon.

Wow, Mauther! You are getting really good at that foam-work! Just don't switch completely from paper-work. I'd like to try that myself, but working in 1:160 scale means that regular bricks are about 1mm x 2mm. That would make me crazy trying to make a brick wall! It does work very well for scenery, however. Rock cliffs and mountainsides.
ReplyDeleteHope you and your family are doing well, Sam
Hi, Sam, Glad to hear about you!
DeleteThanks for the kind words.
About styrofoam, you are right about work with mini scales, but you can try foam board, the same used by n gauge modelers. It is more dense and I think you can work in 1/160 scale with sucess, if you have good eyes, of course. There are a lot of tutorials at outube. Just look for foam borad diorama tutorial.
Thanks for the visit and greetings from Brazil!
