It is amazing how complex models like this, made at a time when there were no graphics or computer programs, can be so perfect fittings, probably made at the expense of many mathematical calculations. I do not know the exact date, but I believe that this vintage paper model of a submarine of the early days of underwater exploration, printed by the French publisher Imagerie d'Epinal, was originally published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The model, masterfully assembled that you see on the photos of this post, is work of the North American modeler Thumb Dog, who posted them on Paper Modelers forum. - Preserved and shared by Gallica website, now you can download and build your own Vintage Submarine.

Hi All, Thumb Dog here,
ReplyDeleteI was delighted to find my model of the Bateau Sous Marin in Papermau. The build was most enjoyable.
However, I’m writing to inform our readers that the model shown in the photographs is not the model that can be built using the vintage print available on the Gallica website. The pictured model is a “kitbashed” version using parts from two copies of the Imagerie d’Epinal Bateau Sous Marin. In the photos, note the two cylindrical center sections, two conning towers and other duplicate parts which are not all found in the original print. To build the model as shown, simply print out two copies (or more) of the model and create your own unique version of this great century-old model. To make a large, finished model, I enlarged the parts and saved them to my computer in sections. Keeping everything to scale, I was able to build a model that measured one foot long.
And please, take time to have a further look around the terrific Gallica site, as there are a number of vintage paper models available for your collection.
Score and fold,
Thumb Dog.
