The Ancient Ship From Fide Church Paper Model - by Gunnar Sillén

The Replica In   Deutsches Teknikmuseum in Berlin.
On the northern wall of Fide church on the island Gotland in the middle of the Baltic, there is an engraving done "al fresco" early in the 13th century when the wall was plastered. The engraving is interesting as it shows the perhaps oldest known picture of a ship with the rudder mounted on the stern-post (instead of laterally on the starboard quarter). Could it be that the stern rudder was invented on Gotland as being the most important merchant center in the Baltic before the Hanseatic League was founded?

Several attempts have been made to reconstruct what the pictured ship could have looked like in real life. One of the more ambitious attempts is exhibited in the Deutsches Teknikmuseum in Berlin.
